Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates. Volume 4: Birds

David O. Norris, Kristin H. Lopez
Publisher: Elsevier Inc.; First edition, 2011
ISBN: 978-0-12-374929-1
267 pages

This series of volumes represents a comprehensive and integrated treatment of reproduction in vertebrates from fishes of all sorts through mammals. It is designed to provide a readable, coordinated description of reproductive basics in each group of vertebrates as well as an introduction to the latest trends in reproductive research and our understanding of reproductive events. Whereas each chapter and each volume is intended to stand alone as a review of that topic or vertebrate group, respectively, the volumes are prepared so as to provide a thorough topical treatment across the vertebrates. Terminology has been standardized across the volumes to reduce confusion where multiple names exist in the literature, and a comprehensive glossary of these terms and their alternative names is provided.
- A complete, essential and up to date reference for research scientists working on vertebrate hormones and reproduction - and on animlals as models in human reproductive research.
- Covers the endocrinology, neuroendocrinology, physiology, behaviour and anatomy of vertebrate reproduction.
- Structured coverage of the major themes for all five vertebrate groups allows a consistent treatment for all.
-Special chapters elaborate on features specific to individual vertebrate groups and to comparative aspects, similarities and differences between them.

Parrots: Hand Feeding and Nursery Management

Howard Voren , Rick Jordan
Publisher: Silvio Mattacchione, 1992
ISBN-10: 1895270103
ISBN-13: 978-1895270105
202 pages

The sequel to Rick Jordan's extremely successful Parrot Incubation Procedures, Rick Jordan and Howard Voren have combined their talents to produce the most comprehensive guide to handfeeding ever. Eleven chapters provide detailed, first-hand knowledge of everything you will ever need to successfully raise baby parrots, including handfeeding formulas, feeding instruments and techniques, weight monitoring, maintenance of nestlings and the nursery, potential health problems, medical procedures, weaning, and much more.

Here are the chapter headings:
1: Managing the Nursery
2: Maintenance of Nestlings (Brooding)
3: Formulas
4: Feeding Instruments and Methods
5: Feeding
6: Weight Monitoring
7: Non-Dietary Factors That Control Weight Gain
8: Potential Health Problems in the Nursery
9: Non-Pathogenic Death
10: Medical Procedures for the Aviculturist
11: Weaning
Each chapter is packed with critical information and well documented with excellent photographs from experienced aviculturists Voren and Jordan.

Raptor Biomedicine

Patrick T. Redig, John E. Cooper, J. David Remple, and D. Bruce Hunter (editors), Trudi Hahn (technical editor)
Publisher: University of Minnesota Press (June 1993)
ISBN-10: 0816622191
ISBN-13: 978-0816622191
265 pages

This book is a refereed collection of papers presented at the Second International Symposium on Biomedical Research in Raptors. This meeting was convened in October 1988 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Raptor Research Foundation, Inc.

“The most complete handbook for rehabilitators of diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey. Very good information on all possible aspects of determining and healing all kinds of problems which could occur in this field. Good tables and figures complete this significant work and is a must have for laboratories and rehabilitation centers working with raptors and owls. Also falconers will gain a good impression on the possible diseases and illnesses of their most beloved birds. The only minus could be its presentation being ringbanded and if written by a typewriter but this should be forgotten as the information included is yet the best in its field in addition with previous work of these authors”

Development of the Avian Embryo: A Behavioural and Physiological Study

B. M. Freeman, Margaret A. Vince
Publisher: CHAPMAN AND HALL, 1st edition, 1974
ISBN-10: 9400957122
ISBN-13: 978-9400957121
362 pages

Development of the embryo is considered in two sections, entitled 'Behaviour' and 'Physiology'. It would be easy to argue that 'Behaviour' is not a fitting word to describe a section which deals systematically with development of the various systems and requirements for successful hatching but this part is so interesting, even to those who are not normally concerned with birds, that the reader will not quibble. Rather will he lose himself in the description of communication between parent and embryo and between clutch-mates before they hatch. Synchronization of hatching is particularly well described. Throughout, description of experimental methods is sufficient to keep the reader interested but not bored. The section on Physiology, though not such compulsive reading, is well-presented, comprehensive and easy to grasp. The chapters on newly hatched birds would repay study by poultry keepers. Students of embryology will find the appendices particularly useful. 'This book is intended primarily for the research student and established research workers, but students specialising in embryology should find the text equally valuable'.

Egg Incubation: Its Effects on Embryonic Development in Birds and Reptiles

Edited by D. Charles Deeming, Mark W. J. Ferguson
Publisher: Cambridge University Press, 2004
ISBN-10: 0521612039
ISBN-13: 978-0521612036
448 pages

A recent rapid expansion in our knowledge of embryonic development in birds and reptiles has created a need for a book that comprehensively reviews and synthesizes data relating to incubation effects on the embryonic development of these two vertebrate classes. The contributors to this book aptly deal with these issues in logical parts. The first deals with the structure, shape, and function of eggs. The second examines the effects of the four main parameters, e.g. temperature, water relations, respiratory gas exchange, and turning, on the process of incubation. The third section deals with early embryonic development and the methods used to investigate and manipulate the embryo. Further chapters deal with estivation, megapodes, and oviparity.
International experts in each field have contributed to this extensively referenced volume and it will be of great interest not only to research biologists, but also to bird and reptile breeders, whether in commercial rganisations or in zoos.

Clinical Anatomy and Physiology of Exotic Species: Structure and Function of Mammals, Birds, Reptiles and Amphibians

Bairbre O'Malley
Publisher: Saunders Ltd.; 1 edition (June 22, 2005)
ISBN-10: 0702027820
ISBN-13: 978-0702027826
269 pages

The first in-depth textbook of its kind, this resource deals solely with the comparative anatomy and physiology of exotic species - small mammals, reptiles, and birds. For these commonly encountered species, it highlights clinical considerations for veterinary treatment. The book is heavily illustrated with clear line diagrams, radiographs, and color illustrations, explaining clearly the functioning of exotic species.
• The first textbook to provide comprehensive coverage of the comparative anatomy and physiology of exotic species.
• Written specifically to give the veterinary practitioner a better understanding of the functioning of exotic species.
• Profusely illustrated with clear line diagrams, radiographs, and color plates.

' This book is written by an experienced exotic animal practitioner and lecturer for a veterinary surgeon in practice who deals with the occasional exotic patient. The main features concentrate on basic information regarding physiology, anatomy, and husbandry. The book contains many excellent and unique colour plates and radiographs for illustration. This will prove invaluable for locating sampling sites and internal and external anatomy for surgery, as well as necropsy. For quick reference the animal classes are divided by colour coded pages. Within each chapter there is information on general and clinical anatomy and physiology of class, followed by more detailed notes on individual species including some guidance on sexing, venepuncture sites and some clinical information. UI deal with many vets who do not treat exotic species on a regular basis and I have recommended this book as a quick reference guide many times. In my view, this book is excellent value for money.' Petra Wesche, Veterianry Times.

‘As veterinary physiologist i think this book is too poor of informations both on anatomical and physiological aspects of exotic animals biology. I think that a good zoology book could cover this arguments in a better way and for a clinical approach it's better a clinical orienteered book.’

This authoritative reference, the first of its kind, is a necessary addition to the library of any practitioner or behaviorist who sees avain companion animals. Because of their beauty, intelligence, playfulness and ability in mimicry, parrots are the most widely kept companion birds. It is estimated that more than half of the psittacine cases presented to clinicians are the result of behavioral problems-problems inherent to captivity.

Bringing together a host of international experts on avian behavior, Manual of Parrot Behavior explores the many facets of psittacine behavior, both normal and abnormal. The book not only provides readers with a solid understanding of the basic principles of psittacine behavior but also offers useful techniques of diagnosis and treatment for specific problems.
* Covers both normal and abnormal parrot behavior
* Offers practical techniques on diagnosis and treatment of behavior problems
* Written by a team of international experts on avian behavior
* A necessary addition to the library of any practitioner of behaviorist who sees avian companion animals

Следует также помнить о том, что не все игрушки являются безопасными: "I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but once more for the record, no parrot toy is 100% safe. Please observe your parrot playing with every new type of toy you introduce to his environment before you leave him alone with it. Check old toys often for frayed cotton rope or long strands of any material. Birds have been known to get pieces of string or threads wrapped around their toes, necks and wings. This authoritative textbook provides an introduction and guide to poultry behavior and welfare. It describes the origin and biology of the various species of bird that are of agricultural importance, as well as giving a succinct overview of their key behavior patterns. There is careful discussion of the many factors that influence their welfare, and detailed consideration of the ways in which legislation and commercial interests interact in an attempt to satisfy the many needs involved. The final chapters discuss possible future developments within the subject. The book is in part an update of a previous work, Poultry Production Systems: Behaviour, Management and Welfare (CABI, 1992), completely rewritten and with much new material added.

Understanding Bird Behaviour

by Stephen Moss
Publisher: Bloomsbury, 1st ed., 2015
ISBN-10: 1472912063
ISBN-13: 978-1472912060
160 pages

The way birds behave is one of the vital keys to accurate identification, and this book provides the experienced instruction needed to understand and get the most out of watching birds. This guide covers all the fundamental types of bird behavior, including movement, feeding, breeding, migration, navigation, distribution, range, life, and death, all of which are illustrated with beautiful photographs. There is a whole section dedicated to the behavior of different species groups, from divers and grebes to sparrows, buntings, and finches.

“It’s an educative read, but it is not quite the comprehensive treatment of the behaviour of all groups of birds that you might surmise from the title; a better one might have been Understanding British Bird Behaviour. The book limits its treatment, for the most part, to species occurring in the British Isles. Despite this, the text provides ample coverage of all the more common examples of bird behaviour that most of us can expect to come across.

Understanding Bird Behaviour makes no claims of being an exhaustive reference but as an introductory text on the subject it covers a lot of ground. The information is clearly presented and perfectly accessible for beginners while still holding plenty to recommend it to experienced birders as well. The limited geographic treatment results in missing many fascinating examples of bird behaviour (nothing on flightless birds, nectarivores, bowerbirds, megapodes, hornbills, birds-of-paradise) but the interested reader will track down full accounts of these groups in other books easily enough.”

The Lung-Air Sac System of Birds: Development, Structure, and Function

John N. Maina
Publisher: Springer; 1st ed., 2005
ISBN-10: 3540255958
ISBN-13: 978-3540255956
210 pages

In biology, few organs have been as elusive as the lung-air sac system of birds. Considerable progress has recently been made to fill the gaps in the knowledge. While summarizing and building on earlier observations and ideas, this book provides cutting-edge details on the development, structure, function, and the evolutionary design of the avian respiratory system. Outlining the mechanisms and principles through which biological complexity and functional novelty have been crafted in a unique gas exchanger, this account will provoke further inquiries on the many still uncertain issues. The specific goal here was to highlight the uniqueness of the design of the avian respiratory system and the factors that obligated it.

Respiratory Function in Birds, Adult and Embryonic: Satellite Symposium of the 27th International Congress of Physiological Sciences

Edited by Johannes Piiper
Publisher: Springer; 1st ed. 1978
ISBN-10: 364266895X
ISBN-13: 978-3642668951
310 pages

This volume contains the papers presented at the symposium on Respiratory Function in Birds, Adult and Erribryonic held in Gottingen, July 28-30, 1977. Some of the manuscripts represent the papers as delivered, while others are considerably abridged or extended. An essential part of the symposium was discussion at all levels, from formal discussion remarks with slides to dialogs at the lunch table with scribble on paper napkins. However, no attempt was made to reproduce any part of the discussion.
The symposium was attended by 75 scientists, of varied specializations (physiology, anatomy, zoophysiology, ecology, veterinary science), but all actively engaged in research related to some aspects of avian respiration.
The aim of the meeting was to survey critically the present knowledge in avian respiration and related areas in order to provide a basis for future research. Due to the limited time available and to the restricted number of invited attendants, not all relevant topics could be given the attention they deserved, but a selection had to be made. A particular emphasis was given to the following aspects of avian respiration; (1) phylogenetic relationships, (2) structure and function of lungs, (3) mechanisms of adjustments to changes in environment and physiological status, (4) respiration during the embryonic period.

The Lung Air Sac System of Birds: A Contribution to the Functional Anatomy of the Respiratory Apparatus

by Hans-Rainer Duncker
Series: Advances in anatomy, embryology and cell biology, bd. 45, heft 6
Publisher: Springer-Verlag Berlin Heide1berg GmbH, 1st ed., 1971
ISBN: 978-3-540-05659-1
171 pages

This journal publishes reviews and critical articles covering the entire field of normal anatomy (cytology, histology, cyto- and histochemistry, electron microscopy, macroscopy, experimental morphology and embryology and comparative anatomy).

The purpose of this study is the elaboration of a concept of the lung air sac system basing on comparative and functional anatomical investigations which may serve as the basis of further physiological studies. Using a specially devised injection technique more than 500 birds of 150 species, from penguins to song birds, were injected with silicon-rubber. In this manner the lung air sac system was demonstrated in connection with the skeleton and then prepared considering the lung construction and the connection of the air sacs. Additionally, 45 species after fixation were prepared in the usual manner. The microscopical structure of the lung air sac system was studied on membrane preparations of the air sac walls and on histological sections through the lung.

Diseases of Poultry (Including Cage Birds)

by P.Seneviratna
Publisher: JOHN WRIGHT & SONS LTD.; 2nd ed., 1969
ISBN-10: 0723602239
ISBN-13: 978-0723602231
229 pages

The favourable response given to the first edition published in 1966 encouraged the author to prepare the second edition within two years of the first. In the second edition, the author has rectified errors, and included omissions to bring the book up to date, taking into consideration the criticism made of the first edition. A special effort was made to include data on published papers that reached the author's hands till the end of September, 1968.
The book has been revised to meet the requirements of the veterinary student and the field veterinarian and as such does not deal with the details of the laboratory procedures of diagnosis which are given in the standard reference work on the subject edited by H. E. Blester and L. H. Schwarte and also in the U.S. National Academy of Science Publication No. 1038.
The chapters on the avian leucosis complex and avian mycoplasmosis have been completely rewritten in view of the important developments made during the last two years, and Marek's disease has been treated as a separate entity. The avian sarcomas have been dealt with under the leucosis complex to indicate the close aetiological relationship of the former to the latter. Several other chapters especially those on coccidiosis, avian encephalomyelitis, and fowl cholera have been revised extensively. Since the first edition was written, several diseases have been described. In the second edition, these diseases, e.g., virus conjunctivitis of chicks, turkey haemorrhagic enteritis, turkey syndrome 65 (TS 65), goose septicaemia, goose plague, and infections with C.E.L.O. virus, avian entero and reo viruses, and turkey respiratory virus have been included.
As in the first edition there are four separate sections in the book, dealing with the diseases of the domestic fowl, the turkey, the duck, goose, and some other birds, and cage birds. The section on diseases of the domestic fowl is more comprehensive than the others.
The chapter on the anatomy and physiology of the domestic fowl has been deleted and one on post-mortem examination added. It is hoped that the data given in the tables of this book will provide a good source of easily assimilable information required by the veterinary undergraduate and the field veterinarian.

Avian Necropsy Manual for Biologists in Remote Refuges

Thierry M Work
Publisher: National Wildlife Health Center (United States), 2000
ISBN-10: ---
ISBN-13: ---

This manual is for biologists in remote refuges who have little to no background in necropsy techniques. It is intended to assist you in recognition of bird organs and in procurement of appropriate samples for pathologic and other laboratory assays. The manual will probably be most useful in situations when wildlife disease specialists are unable to assist in sample collection due to remoteness or inaccessibility of the site.

Histopathology and Cytology of Poultry Diseases: A Colour Atlas (Online ebook)
by Ivan Dinev ; Publisher: --- , 2009; ISBN-10: ---; ISBN-13: ---; 97 pages
After publishing our first book, "A Colour Atlas of Poultry Diseases", our next challenge was to produce a more in-depth and specialized book on the matter.
The book is divided into units on an etiological basis, with the idea of more convenient laboratory diagnostics of poultry diseases. The primary approach is the demonstration of lesions through photographic material. The book contains 214 colour photos total. All images are original and obtained during our research and diagnostic consultant activities.

http://www.amazon.com/Avian-Viruses-Functi...ion+and+Control

A Birdkeeper's Guide to Budgies by David Alderton, Budgies A Guide To Caring for Your Parakeet by Angela Davids, Parakeet - Your Happy Healthy Pet by Julie Rach Mancini.

Avian Immunology, Second Edition

Karel A. Schat (Editor), Bernd Kaspers (Editor), Pete Kaiser (Editor)
Publisher: Academic Press; 2 edition, 2013
ISBN-10: 0123969654
ISBN-13: 978-0123969651
456 pages

The second edition of Avian Immunology provides an up-to-date overview of the current knowledge of avian immunology. From the ontogeny of the avian immune system to practical application in vaccinology, the book encompasses all aspects of innate and adaptive immunity in chickens. In addition, chapters are devoted to the immunology of other commercially important species such as turkeys and ducks, and to ecoimmunology summarizing the knowledge of immune responses in free-living birds often in relation to reproductive success.
The book contains a detailed description of the avian innate immune system, encompassing the mucosal, enteric, respiratory and reproductive systems. The diseases and disorders it covers include immunodepressive diseases and immune evasion, autoimmune diseases, and tumors of the immune system. Practical aspects of vaccination are examined as well. Extensive appendices summarize resources for scientists including cell lines, inbred chicken lines, cytokines, chemokines, and monoclonal antibodies.
The world-wide importance of poultry protein for the human diet, as well as the threat of avian influenza pandemics like H5N1 and heavy reliance on vaccination to protect commercial flocks makes this book a vital resource. This book provides crucial information not only for poultry health professionals and avian biologists, but also for comparative and veterinary immunologists, graduate students and veterinary students with an interest in avian immunology.
• With contributions from 33 of the foremost international experts in the field, this book provides the most up-to-date review of avian immunology so far
• Contains a detailed description of the avian innate immune system reviewing constitutive barriers, chemical and cellular responses; it includes a comprehensive review of avian Toll-like receptors
• Contains a wide-ranging review of the "ecoimmunology" of free-living avian species, as applied to studies of population dynamics, and reviews methods and resources available for carrying out such research.

Avian Leukosis (Developments in Veterinary Virology)

edited by G.F. De Boer
Publisher: Martinus Nijhoff Publishing, 1987
ISBN-10: 1461292239
ISBN-13: 978-1-4612-9223-4
292 pages

The intention of the series Developments in Veterinary Virology is to provide monographs dealing with the major animal viral diseases. Each volume will include the latest achievements in fundamental research and practical applications and should be readable for people from various disciplines and different backgrounds.
The multi-author approach provides the best opportunity to keep each chapter at the highest level and makes the composition of the volumes manageable to the editors.
This monograph on Avian Leukosis presents comprehensive reviews on the recent history of avian retrovirus research, on epizootiological, virological, pathological aspects, on tumor induction, the immune response to avian retroviruses, virus-cell interactions and on techniques for diagnosis. The volume deals mainly with exogenous avian leukosis virus (ALV) infections, but one chapter is entirely devoted to endogenous avian leukemia virus. Molecular biology aspects are confined to various oncogenes and to lymphoma induction since retroviruses, including those specific for avian species, have recently been described in detail in the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory series "Molecular Biology of Tumor Viruses". Two chapters are devoted to the practical application of insights obtained from avian leukosis research: influences of AL V infection on production performance and eradication procedures.
