A Colour Atlas of Avian Anatomy

Publisher: Wolfe Publishing Ltd, 1990
ISBN 0 7234 1575 7
Number Of Pages: 127

This colour atlas provides an introduction to how birds are constructed. It is concerned principally with the economically important species, but, where their anatomy significantly differ, the more common caged birds are dealt with. The book is planned around certain body systems including the integument and skeleton and digestive, urogenital and respiratory tracts. Lymphoid tissue, blood vessels and nerves are dealt with as they occur in association with these systems. In some instances, a straight topographical approach is taken. Most of the photographs are of fresh, unfixed material, some were taken with the aid of a dissecting microscope. The photographs are accompanied by a short text which identifies the various features and explains their function.

Atlas of Avian Hematology
(Series: Agriculture monograph ; no. 25)

Alfred M. Lucas, Casimir Jamroz
Publisher: Washington, D.C. :U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, 1961
ISBN: _0-0301-0018176-4
271 pages

“No attempt is made to champion any theory of hematopoiesis; the total effort has gone into recording what was seen and putting the cells in serial order whenever possible. In some cases it has been impossible to carry a series back to a stem cell and, rather than force a point, blanks have been left in the record. In the avian field, we are just beginning a study of normal blood morphology and thus are now at the stage attained in the human field 50 to 75 years ago. When investigations on histology and anatomy in the mammalian and human fields were being vigorously pursued at about the turn of the century, the counterpart of such studies in the avian field was neglected, perhaps because it was not realized that the same kind of prerequisite information was needed to form the foundation for later exact investigations in poultry diseases, pathology, physiology, embryology, and nutrition.
Critical studies in the field of blood diseases of poultry have been retarded because a reference work on the morphology of normal and abnormal cells has not previously existed. The Atlas of Avian Hematology is the first publication within the framework of a broad program on the basic histology and anatomy of the fowl. It is hoped that the program can be carried to completion. In the interim following the completion of the manuscript, new information on the subject of avian and mammalian hematology has been published. Therefore, a few references have been added on page 242. Two addenda, one on page 93 and another on page 140, have been inserted at the end of chapters so that pagination would not be disturbed”

BSAVA Manual of Psittacine Birds, 2nd edition

Edited by: Nigel Harcourt-Brown and John Chitty
Publisher: BSAVA; 2 edition (2005)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0905214765
ISBN-13: 978-0905214764
320 pages

The many advances in psittacine medicine since the previous edition was published in 1996 are reflected in this Manual, which has been updated and rewritten under the direction of a new editorial partnership. The extended use of colour photographs adds to the extra usefulness of this successor to a well loved volume.

Clinical examination is presented in a logical, highly practical way, with integrated photographs of key features. The chapter ends with notes on critical and emergency cases. The basic techniques of injection, crop tubing, microchipping, and wing, claw and beak clipping are described and illustrated. The role of clinical pathology is demonstrated, including colour images of haematology and cytology, and a step-by-step post-mortem examination procedure is presented. Diagnostic imaging encompasses radiography, ultrasonography and endoscopy, with views o both normal abd abnormal presentations. Surgical principles plus procedures for both soft and hard tissues are then described.

Subsequent chapters cover systemic illnesses and disease by individua organ system. These are designed to be read in their entirety or to be referred to as needed.

For general practitioners the most commonly seen psittacine patients are small parrots, Cockateils and Budgerigars. A chapter is therefore devoted to dealing with common problems in these small patients. This practical approach to the sick bird is extended in an appendix of diagnostic algorithms for common presentations such as 'fluffing up', fitting and feather damage.

The editors both developed their interests in avian medicine from general practice and this has resulted in a practical, easy-to-use and relevant guide to psittacine medicine.

Practical Handbook of Falcon Husbandry and Medicine

Margit Gabriele Muller
Publisher: Nova Science Publishers, Inc.; 1st edition (2009)
ISBN-10: 1607416085
ISBN-13: 978-1607416081
403 pages

Falcon medicine exists for centuries, but in the past 10-15 years tremendous progress and new development of diseases and treatment methods have been made. It has always been a challenge to treat these beautiful birds of prey and the challenge continues until now. Falcons, falconry and falcon medicine are important in Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates which can be regarded as the cradle of modern falcon medicine in the 21st century. Having treated more than 30,000 falcons over the past years, the author feels that the time has come to share her outstanding experience with the veterinarians’ and falconers’ community for the sake of these incredible birds of prey – to enhance their living conditions and to improve medical falcon health care world-wide. This book is based on her experience of a large variety of different cases and is therefore very practical-oriented. It is intended to be a useful handbook for all interested people working with falcons and other avians such as veterinarians, veterinary students, falconers and raptor rehabilitation workers. The aim of this book is not to include all research that has ever been done on falcons, but to highlight those issues that are really working out in practice. It includes 17 chapters ranging from history of falcon medicine to different diseases up to first aid and intensive care medicine.

BSAVA Manual of Raptors, Pigeons and Passerine Birds

Edited by: John Chitty and Michael Lierz
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, 2008
ISBN-10: 1905319045
ISBN-13: 978-1905319046
412 pages

This book updates completely the information on birds of prey and pigeons and doves found in the BSAVA Manual of Raptors, Pigeons and Waterfowl, published twelve years ago. The advent of the new BSAVA Manual of Farm Pets, which encompasses waterfowl, has allowed a change in focus to feature passerine birds in detail for the first time.
The Manual starts with the all-important area of husbandry for the three groups, including those kept as working birds as well as ornamental and pet species. More general topics, such as handling, examination, diagnostic procedures and surgery are dealt with across the groups, with notes as required on specific differences. An excellent chapter is included on endoscopy and endosurgery - a major technique for avian patients.
The specialist section on raptor disease is very detailed, including an in-depth chapter on foot disease, especially bumblefoot. Recent interest in captive breeding is reflected in detailed chapters on reproduction and paediatrics. The sections dedicated to pigeons and passerine birds look at birds at both the individual and flock level.
A wealth of international expert authors, and the BSAVA Manual trademark practical approach and superb full-colour images throughout make this book a wonderful addition to the practice bookshelf.

Anatomical & Clinical Radiology of Birds of Prey: Including Interactive Advanced Anatomical Imaging

Jaime Samour MVZ PhD Dip ECAMS (Editor), Jesus L. Naldo DVM (Editor)
Publisher: Saunders Ltd.; 1 edition (March 1, 2007)
ISBN-10: 0702028029
ISBN-13: 978-0702028021
300 pages

"It is no exaggeration to state that this book will change the lives of all veterinary surgeons regularly involved with raptors, with respect to radiograph interpretation......This book contains practical, useful information that can be used on a daily basis by the avian veterinarian, and fully deserves to become a standard textbook in both avian and wildlife practices." - Michael Stanford, The Veterinary Record, July 14 2007

"The aim of this text according to the authors was to produce a reference atlas on the anatomical and clinical radiology of birds of prey that could be used within the veterinary profession. Samour and Naldo certainly go some way to achieving this goal with an extensive catalogue of standardised radiographic images. The book can essentially be divided into four main sections; radiographic technique, anatomical radiology of representative species, clinical radiographic conditions and advanced imaging techniques. The latter is touched on in the text but expanded upon in far greater detail within the interactive DVD that is included.

In conclusion this book is a well illustrated and informative text with something to offer both the student and the specialist raptor practitioner. It helps to strengthen our foundation of knowledge in avian and raptor medicine at a time when, as Nigel Harcourt Brown says in the foreword, "cutting edge topics based on small numbers of cases” seem to be the order of the day. I would recommend all veterinarians involved
with birds of prey to purchase this book." - FALCO, The Newsletter of the Middle East Falcon Research Group, Issue No.30 Autumn 2007

• This is the first atlas to include a chapter on common radiographic mistakes to help the specialists working in this field!
• Exceptionally high-quality images provide an invaluable reference for clinical practice.
• A color photograph of a particular clinical condition is presented together with the radiograph to show the layers of the condition.
• Coverage of advanced clinical anatomy imaging includes ultrasonography, computed axial tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
• Includes a unique section on magnification radiography.

Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease: A Field and Laboratory Manual
Ilaria Capua, Dennis J. Alexander; Publisher: Springer, 2009; ISBN-10: 8847008255; ISBN-13: 978-8847008250; 186 pages

Avian Influenza (AI) and Newcastle Disease (ND) are two devastating diseases of poultry, which cause losses to the poultry industry and influence the liveability of rural communities worldwide. Following the H5N1 epidemic they appear to be endemic at least in Asia, Eastern Europe, The Middle East and Africa. Particularly in case of AI outbreaks it is essential that infection is diagnosed promptly and that isolates are made available to the international scientific community. Currently, several organisations including OIE, FAO and the EC have organised training courses in affected areas. However, often these courses do not cover all aspects of AI/ND diagnosis but only certain aspects. This results in fragmented areas of knowledge and in the application of different diagnostic protocols in different parts of the world. The objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive approach to AI diagnosis ranging from the clinical elements that should trigger a suspicion in the field, to the post mortem technique, collection of samples, processing/ shipment of specimens, virological, serological and molecular diagnosis and guidelines for notification.

Avian Influenza Virus
Editor Erica Spackman; Publisher: Humana Press, 2008; ISBN: 978-1-58829-939-0; 141 pages

With the growing global fear of a major pandemic, avian influenza (AI) virus research has greatly increased in importance. In Avian Influenza Virus, an expert team of researchers and diagnosticians examine the fundamental, yet essential, virological methods for AI virus research and diagnostics as well as some of the newest molecular procedures currently used for basic and applied research. They present exciting, cutting-edge new methods that focus both on studying the virus itself and on work with avian hosts, an area greatly lacking in research.

Newcastle Disease (Developments in Veterinary Virology)

Edited by D. J. Alexander
Publisher: Kluwer Academic Publishers; 1988
ISBN-13: 978-1-4612-8987-6
378 pages

The objective of this volume has been to bring together the current views and opinions of recognised experts to give comprehensive coverage of Newcastle disease, the causative virus and its control. It is to be hoped that it will appeal equally to those interested in Newcastle disease virus as a laboratory model and those concerned with the diagnosis and control of the field disease, and that, for those specialising in a single area, the presence of all these aspects in one volume will prove a catalyst for greater interest in and understanding of the wider parameters of the problem.

Publisher: S Karger Pub; 1 edition (June 30, 2008)
ISBN-10: 3805585012
ISBN-13: 978-3805585019
292 pages

Because of its high impact on both animal and human health, avian influenza has become a matter of increasing public concern and growing scientific interest within the last decade. This volume gives an overview of the most important results of these research efforts and provides information about the ecology and epidemiology of avian influenza with particular emphasis on recent H5N1 outbreaks in China, Siberia and Europe. Several articles deal with new vaccination strategies, the use of antivirals and other control measures to combat outbreaks of avian influenza.Further chapters illustrate that molecular biology, culminating in the generation of influenza viruses by recombinant DNA technology, was instrumental in unraveling the roles of the viral hemagglutinin and polymerase as well as cellular signaling pathways and innate immunity in pathogenesis and interspecies transmission. Finally, the threat of a pandemic originating from avian influenza viruses is illustrated by the example of the Spanish influenza of 1918. This comprehensive publication on avian influenza viruses and their relevance for human influenza will be of great value to all influenza virologists, molecular biologists, public health scientists, veterinary virologists, ecologists, and scientists engaged in drug design and vaccine development.
