Diseases of Poultry (Including Cage Birds)

by P.Seneviratna
Publisher: JOHN WRIGHT & SONS LTD.; 2nd ed., 1969
ISBN-10: 0723602239
ISBN-13: 978-0723602231
229 pages

The favourable response given to the first edition published in 1966 encouraged the author to prepare the second edition within two years of the first. In the second edition, the author has rectified errors, and included omissions to bring the book up to date, taking into consideration the criticism made of the first edition. A special effort was made to include data on published papers that reached the author's hands till the end of September, 1968.
The book has been revised to meet the requirements of the veterinary student and the field veterinarian and as such does not deal with the details of the laboratory procedures of diagnosis which are given in the standard reference work on the subject edited by H. E. Blester and L. H. Schwarte and also in the U.S. National Academy of Science Publication No. 1038.
The chapters on the avian leucosis complex and avian mycoplasmosis have been completely rewritten in view of the important developments made during the last two years, and Marek's disease has been treated as a separate entity. The avian sarcomas have been dealt with under the leucosis complex to indicate the close aetiological relationship of the former to the latter. Several other chapters especially those on coccidiosis, avian encephalomyelitis, and fowl cholera have been revised extensively. Since the first edition was written, several diseases have been described. In the second edition, these diseases, e.g., virus conjunctivitis of chicks, turkey haemorrhagic enteritis, turkey syndrome 65 (TS 65), goose septicaemia, goose plague, and infections with C.E.L.O. virus, avian entero and reo viruses, and turkey respiratory virus have been included.
As in the first edition there are four separate sections in the book, dealing with the diseases of the domestic fowl, the turkey, the duck, goose, and some other birds, and cage birds. The section on diseases of the domestic fowl is more comprehensive than the others.
The chapter on the anatomy and physiology of the domestic fowl has been deleted and one on post-mortem examination added. It is hoped that the data given in the tables of this book will provide a good source of easily assimilable information required by the veterinary undergraduate and the field veterinarian.

A Practitioner's Guide to Avian Necropsy

by Robert Schmidt and Drury Reavill
Publisher: Zoological Education Network (2003)
ISBN-10: 0970639503
ISBN-13: 978-0970639509
545 pages

The Zoological Education Network introduces "A Practitioners' Guide to Avian Necropsy." The CD was developed by board-certified veterinary pathologists Drs. Robert Schmidt and Drury Reavill who bring more than 30 years of experience in diagnosing diseases of captive birds. The company says that small animal veterinarians, whether experienced or new to the avian field, will find pertinent information on the topic. The CD is easy-to-navigate and includes the most effective diagnostic necropsy steps, as well as a thorough reference of potential lesions documented in companion birds and offers guidance in developing a differential diagnosis, the company adds.

Avian Necropsy Manual for Biologists in Remote Refuges

Thierry M Work
Publisher: National Wildlife Health Center (United States), 2000
ISBN-10: ---
ISBN-13: ---
30 pages

This manual is for biologists in remote refuges who have little to no background in necropsy techniques. It is intended to assist you in recognition of bird organs and in procurement of appropriate samples for pathologic and other laboratory assays. The manual will probably be most useful in situations when wildlife disease specialists are unable to assist in sample collection due to remoteness or inaccessibility of the site.

Histopathology and Cytology of Poultry Diseases: A Colour Atlas (Online ebook)
by Ivan Dinev ; Publisher: --- , 2009; ISBN-10: ---; ISBN-13: ---; 97 pages
After publishing our first book, "A Colour Atlas of Poultry Diseases", our next challenge was to produce a more in-depth and specialized book on the matter.
The book is divided into units on an etiological basis, with the idea of more convenient laboratory diagnostics of poultry diseases. The primary approach is the demonstration of lesions through photographic material. The book contains 214 colour photos total. All images are original and obtained during our research and diagnostic consultant activities.

Avian Immunology, Second Edition

Karel A. Schat (Editor), Bernd Kaspers (Editor), Pete Kaiser (Editor)
Publisher: Academic Press; 2 edition, 2013
ISBN-10: 0123969654
ISBN-13: 978-0123969651
456 pages

The second edition of Avian Immunology provides an up-to-date overview of the current knowledge of avian immunology. From the ontogeny of the avian immune system to practical application in vaccinology, the book encompasses all aspects of innate and adaptive immunity in chickens. In addition, chapters are devoted to the immunology of other commercially important species such as turkeys and ducks, and to ecoimmunology summarizing the knowledge of immune responses in free-living birds often in relation to reproductive success.
The book contains a detailed description of the avian innate immune system, encompassing the mucosal, enteric, respiratory and reproductive systems. The diseases and disorders it covers include immunodepressive diseases and immune evasion, autoimmune diseases, and tumors of the immune system. Practical aspects of vaccination are examined as well. Extensive appendices summarize resources for scientists including cell lines, inbred chicken lines, cytokines, chemokines, and monoclonal antibodies.
The world-wide importance of poultry protein for the human diet, as well as the threat of avian influenza pandemics like H5N1 and heavy reliance on vaccination to protect commercial flocks makes this book a vital resource. This book provides crucial information not only for poultry health professionals and avian biologists, but also for comparative and veterinary immunologists, graduate students and veterinary students with an interest in avian immunology.
• With contributions from 33 of the foremost international experts in the field, this book provides the most up-to-date review of avian immunology so far
• Contains a detailed description of the avian innate immune system reviewing constitutive barriers, chemical and cellular responses; it includes a comprehensive review of avian Toll-like receptors
• Contains a wide-ranging review of the "ecoimmunology" of free-living avian species, as applied to studies of population dynamics, and reviews methods and resources available for carrying out such research.

Avian Leukosis (Developments in Veterinary Virology)

edited by G.F. De Boer
Publisher: Martinus Nijhoff Publishing, 1987
ISBN-10: 1461292239
ISBN-13: 978-1-4612-9223-4
292 pages

The intention of the series Developments in Veterinary Virology is to provide monographs dealing with the major animal viral diseases. Each volume will include the latest achievements in fundamental research and practical applications and should be readable for people from various disciplines and different backgrounds.
The multi-author approach provides the best opportunity to keep each chapter at the highest level and makes the composition of the volumes manageable to the editors.
This monograph on Avian Leukosis presents comprehensive reviews on the recent history of avian retrovirus research, on epizootiological, virological, pathological aspects, on tumor induction, the immune response to avian retroviruses, virus-cell interactions and on techniques for diagnosis. The volume deals mainly with exogenous avian leukosis virus (ALV) infections, but one chapter is entirely devoted to endogenous avian leukemia virus. Molecular biology aspects are confined to various oncogenes and to lymphoma induction since retroviruses, including those specific for avian species, have recently been described in detail in the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory series "Molecular Biology of Tumor Viruses". Two chapters are devoted to the practical application of insights obtained from avian leukosis research: influences of AL V infection on production performance and eradication procedures.

Emerging Avian Disease: Published for the Cooper Ornithological Society
(Studies in Avian Biology No. 42)

Ellen Paul (Editor)
Publisher: University of California Press; 1st edition, 2012
ASIN: B007ZQBOJI
108 pages

In this volume, new human disease pandemics, arising from animals stimulated by ongoing environmental change, demonstrate the value of ornithological research into avian diseases. A group of 29 researchers addresses a diverse set of topics, including the evolutionary and ecological aspects of the host-vector systems, the effects of genetic variation, introduction success and vector ecology, evolution of resistance and virulence of pathogens, and the effects of changing geographic distributions. In addition to empirical studies under field conditions, the authors present predictive models to assess the movement and potential impact of these diseases. Other chapters delve into the potential impacts of pathogens and the key role of biosurveillance and documenting impacts of disease on bird populations.

Microbiology of the Avian Egg

Edited by R. G. Board, R. Fuller
Publisher: Springer Science+Business Media, 1st edition, 1994
ISBN-10: ---
ISBN-13: 978-1461363354
181 pages

Comparative studies are a very uncommon feature of studies concerned with bacterial infection of eggs. Moreover there is as yet little effort made to link studies of bacterial contamination of eggs with a fundamental aspect of eggs, the mechanisms allowing embryogenesis to occur without interference from saprophytic microorganisms that could colonize the yolk and deny the embryo its principal reserve of nutrients. Empirical observations together with laboratory studies in the period 1900-1960 provided an adequate basis for the mass production, distribution and marketing of eggs without fear of a high incidence of addling. The inadequacies of these data have been cruelly exposed by the current 'epidemic' of salmonellosis associated with egg products. Indeed this book was prepared with the objective of providing both an overview of current knowledge and a platform upon which to build future studies.
This book should be of interest to microbiologists, food microbiologists, animal scientists, Public Health Laboratory Service personnel, zoologists, Environmental Health Officers, personnel in industry.

Genetics and Evolution of the Domestic Fowl

Lewis Stevens
Publisher: Cambridge University Press, 2005
ISBN-10: 0521017572
ISBN-13: 978-0521017572
306 pages

The science of genetics has undergone a period of very rapid and significant development in recent years, and the area of poultry genetics has been no exception. This book provides a balanced and up-to-date account of all the major areas of this subject from Mendelian to modern molecular genetics. The book begins by tracing the evolution of the domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus) from its avian ancestors. Subsequent chapters cover important aspects of poultry genetics, including cytogenetics, transmission genetics, gene mapping, sex linkage, lethal genes, genetics of feathering and plumage, and quantitative genetics. In each chapter, a concise explanation of the genetic principles is followed by a full discussion illustrated by key examples. In the latter part of the book, recent advances in gene cloning and sequencing are examined. In the area of molecular genetics, where the most rapid developments have been made, more extensive background information is given and a glossary of terms is included. The impact of these exciting new developments on our understanding of gene structure and organization, immunogenetics, and the evolution of proteins is assessed. Finally, the uses of transgenic techniques and their implications are discussed. This book provides a clear and useful survey of the genetics and evolution of the domestic fowl, which will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of genetics, agriculture, and veterinary medicine, as well as to poultry breeders, both commercial and non-commercial.

Recent Advances of Avian Endocrinology: Satellite Symposium of the 28th International Congress of Physiological Sciences;
Székesfehérvár, Hungary, 1980 (Volume 33)

G. Pethes, P. Péczely and P. Rudas (Editors)
Publisher: Pergamon Press, 1981
ISBN-10: 1483115917
ISBN-13: 978-1483115917
469 pages

The challenge created by the industrialization of animal husbandry was met, amongst other disciplines, by animal physiology and especially in the endocrinology of reproduction and metabolism.
When the possibility of having a Satellite Symposium was raised, we remembered the first step in animal physiology, a Satellite Symposium on Perinatal Homeostasis, organized in Lyon in 1967, by Professor J. Bost.
Unanimous votes were given for topics on avian physiology, and as this has been emphasized within Section 14 of the 28th IUPS Congress later we turned to a more specified field, i.e. avian endocrinology, and this was announced in 1978.

Avian Energetics and Nutritional Ecology

Edited by Cynthia Carey
Publisher: Chapman & Hall, 1996
ISBN-10: 1461380464
ISBN-13: 978-1461380467
543 pages

This volume analyzes the extremely energetic lifestyle of birds. Birds invest a large amount of energy flying, migrating, in parental care, and in reproducing. Leading researchers describe energy use by birds, and each chapter discusses the ecological implication of the topic and as far as possible describes the molecular and cellular mechanism behind each adaptation. Included are chapters on nutrition, digestion and feeding, metabolism, thermoregulation, hypometabolism, starvation, flight, moulting, foraging, migratory fattening, reproduction, incubation, embryonic development, post-natal growth, and populational energetics.

Biology and Comparative Physiology of Birds (2 Volume Set)

Edited by A. J. Marshall
Publisher: Academic Publishers; 1st edition, 1960 and 1961
ISBN-10: 1125968672
ISBN-13: 978-1125968673
986 pages

‘At first the book was meant to be issued in a single volume but it soon became apparent that two would be a more convenient proposition. It is designed not only for professional and amateur ornithologists, but also for general biologists who will find in it at least some of the information that they may need from time to time. A great deal of vital physiological data on domestic birds is already obtainable in Sturkie's Avian Physiology and the Romanoff's The Avian Egg and relatively little of this is repeated by us.
Inevitably the present work is not completely integrated. There are of necessity many omissions and again, some chapters overlap. A few discrepancies occur that are hardly to be avoided when a number of people, most of whom are actively engaged in adjacent fields are invited to write precisely what they wish. Each author is responsible for the facts and phraseology in his contribution, but neither he, nor most emphatically the editor, is responsible for the spelling. Some of the spelling employed (in particular the almost total avoidance of hyphens) has resulted in brutalities that will seem to many people something like the penultimate defeat of the English language.
My wife, Jane Marshall, has prepared many of the diagrams from sketches or other material submitted by some of the authors, and during the making of the book, Mr. C. M. Hutt and the staff of Academic Press, London, have been enormously helpful to me.’

The Welfare of Domestic Fowl and Other Captive Birds
Series: Animal Welfare (Book 9)

Edited by Ian J.H. Duncan, Penny Hawkins
Publisher: Springer; 2010
ISBN-10: 9048136490
ISBN-13: 978-9048136490
307 pages

This book describes the welfare implications of keeping wild and domesticated birds in captivity. The environmental and social requirements of various avian species are discussed and suggestions made for appropriate housing and management techniques. Particular attention is paid to human-bird interactions and their impact on the behaviour and welfare of the birds involved. Training methods for companion birds are also described. Possible future trends in keeping birds in captivity are discussed in relation to evolving laws and codes for both wild and domesticated birds and in the light of developing ethical attitudes to animals.
The book will be invaluable to all those who keep birds including poultry farmers, pet owners, and managers and caretakers of birds kept in laboratories, zoos, wildlife aviaries, and rehabilitation centres. It will also be of great interest to poultry production, zoology, wildlife and veterinary students.

Birds: Brain and Behavior

Edited by Irving J. Goodman and Martin W. Schein
Publisher: Academic Press, 1974
ISBN: 0-12-290350-1
273 pages

The present volume is an effort to contribute to the assessment, particularly with respect to birds. If we are to utilize efficiently the insights afforded by a comparative approach to brain-behavior problems, then the wealth of information presently available on mammals must be matched by comparable qualitative and quantitative information on other animals with functioning brains. Hence our concentration on birds, which are characterized by complex and well-integrated central nervous systems, but also by far more stereotyped behavioral repertoires than those exhibited by mammals.
The first section of the present volume deals with some theoretical and methodological questions involved in comparative studies of behavior and in brain-behavior relationships. These two areas of thought contain a number of ideas and viewpoints ranging from the controversial to the well accepted, and from the tenuously formulated to the moderately clear. Another section deals more directly with neuroanatomic information regarding sensory motor structure and connections. Some recent findings in this area have raised a number of questions about previous conceptualizations of avian neural organization. The last section examines and summarizes data pertaining to neural correlates or causes of various behavioral phenomena such as feeding, learning and memory, sleep, emotion, audition, vision, vocalization, and adaptation to various schedules of reinforcement.

The Alex Studies: Cognitive and Communicative Abilities of Grey Parrots

by Irene M. Pepperberg
Publisher: Harvard University Press, 1st ed., 2002
ISBN: 0-674-00806-5
434 pages

Can a parrot understand complex concepts and mean what it says? Since the early 1900s, most studies on animal–human communication have focused on great apes and a few cetacean species. Birds were rarely used in similar studies on the grounds that they were merely talented mimics—that they were, after all, “birdbrains.” Experiments performed primarily on pigeons in Skinner boxes demonstrated capacities inferior to those of mammals; these results were thought to reflect the capacities of all birds, despite evidence suggesting that species such as jays, crows, and parrots might be capable of more impressive cognitive feats.

Twenty years ago, Irene Pepperberg set out to discover whether the results of the pigeon studies necessarily meant that other birds—particularly the large-brained, highly social parrots—were incapable of mastering complex cognitive concepts and the rudiments of referential speech. Her investigation and the bird at its center—a male Grey parrot named Alex—have since become almost as well known as their primate equivalents and no less a subject of fierce debate in the field of animal cognition. This book represents the long-awaited synthesis of the studies constituting one of the landmark experiments in modern comparative psychology.

Reptiles and birds have highly diverse hearing organs. Data on a huge amount of information concerning all aspects of structural, neurophysiological and anatomical aspects are reviewed as published up to mid-1988: in addition a good deal of yet unpublished data from the author's laboratory are included. The literature on hearing is scattered through a great variety of zoological, medical, psychological, psychoacoustical and bioengineering journals: this book condenses all important findings in one source.
